Repeal Closed Primaries

Every spring, Pennsylvania's voters head to the polls for the Commonwealth's primary elections.

But not everyone is included in this process. That’s because primaries are closed in Pennsylvania.  More than 1.1 million taxpaying independent voters are denied their right to vote in these elections, despite paying their share of $75 million a year to fund them.

It’s time to #RepealClosedPrimaries and allow every legally registered voter to cast a ballot in PA’s primary.

74% of Pennsylvanians support repealing closed primaries - including strong majorities of independents, Democrats, and Republicans.

Repealing closed primaries would guarantee a more fair process, increase the competitiveness of races, and help limit the amount of extremism and gridlock on both sides.

Join the overwhelming majority of PA voters in favor of ending closed primaries in PA – add your name below to join the movement to #RepealClosedPrimaries now.

Ballot PA is a project of the Committee of Seventy and is a growing coalition of civic, community and business organizations committed to ensuring independents in Pennsylvania have the right to vote in primary elections.

I feel that people have the right to be individuals even at the ballot box. I think that closed primaries remove this right and force people to “pick a side,” instead of encouraging cooperation between the parties.

I hate that I cannot vote in primaries. It would likely make big differences in the outcome. We need to change this. Thank you for your efforts.

Just because we don’t support a specific party doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have the right to vote! PA needs to come to the party and change that antiquated policy.

When I moved to York County last year, I was totally GOBSMACKED that there is NO LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS in York County. WTF? I was so very used to getting their papers, that give all the people running for office’s answers to common questions. Wow. How backwards can a place POSSIBLY be??

Ranked-choice voting would also be preferable.

David Thorburgh wrote an explanation about independent voters in PA answering someone else’s question I believe through Quora and it blew my mind when I read his statement. I can’t believe they actually shutout independent voters because no affiliation. I was a Republican to a Conservative to Independent because I’m tired of both parties. I don’t understand why it’s so wrong being an independent and than you can actually look at the core values and beliefs of people your voting for in both parties rather than focusing on one party. I also don’t agree with abortion and if I wanted to be a Democrat that’s prolife than I would probably be the only one. I also only believe in the popular vote and I think the electoral vote is a joke and it is basically saying the General population isn’t fit to vote. What’s the point of even voting with the electoral vote. Our representatives in our country makes everything so confusing so they can basically do what they want when they disagree and get away with it.

This should be a right for all citizens with the duopoly the parties have in politics.

As a third party supporter who cannot vote in closed primaries, and has since been disgusted that we the people are only limited to two parties, I henceforth lend my support to this cause.

Everyone who is of legal age and whatever affiliation that they choose should have the right to vote!

This two-party system we have here in the U.S. is rotten. Rotten to the core, and we the people must do what we can to have both sides looking more toward the middle.

Pennsylvania Voting policies for the primaries are a joke. Feels like the election is pre-rigged to a certain extent when my only option is to vote for one of the 2 clowns the main parties voted for, but I did not…
