Many voters understandably find themselves in a position where they cannot in good conscience affiliate with a particular political party, even if their political views generally align more with one party than another. Other voters might find themselves sympathetic to a particular party but refuse to register with the party out of fear of the consequences of identifying themselves as Democrats or Republicans, especially if their friends, family, and broader community are all heavily skewed in favor of the other party.
