Every spring, Pennsylvania's voters head to the polls for the Commonwealth's primary elections.

But not everyone is included in this process. That’s because primaries are closed in Pennsylvania.  More than 1.4 million taxpaying independent voters are denied their right to vote in these elections, despite paying their share of $75 million a year to fund them.

It’s time to #RepealClosedPrimaries and allow every legally registered voter to cast a ballot in PA’s primary.

77% of Pennsylvanians support repealing closed primaries - including strong majorities of independents, Democrats, and Republicans.

Repealing closed primaries would guarantee a more fair process, increase the competitiveness of races, and help limit the amount of extremism and gridlock on both sides.

Join the overwhelming majority of PA voters who favor repealing closed primaries.

I remain an independent, because I don’t believe in “identity” politics where I’m pigeon-holed to cast my vote for whomever is on the ballot under a democrat or republican designation. I vote for the best candidate with the policies that I align with, and also a person of high morality and character, and one who is NOT a felon or S.A. I pay my state and federal taxes and deserve to have my voice heard and vote counted in every election, as does every Pennsylvanian. Don’t shut us out. Open the Primaries – our democracy and country is at stake.

I am a registered Democrat in Blair County, and that greatly limits my primary voting choices. I no longer want to be affiliated with any political party and want to change my registration to independent. However, registering as independent will further limit my voting choices in primary elections. Change Pennsylvania to open primaries. I want to be able to vote in primaries for the person I deem most worthy of my vote regardless of their party affiliation.

I used to be registered Independent in 2016 to vote for Bernie Sanders or third party and had to change my voter registration to Democrat just to participate in local/State elections. I absolutely abhor this disenfranchisement and unconstitutional actions of purposefully creating a situation to force voters to have to fully vote with their party. This is also illogical due to the fact that party affiliation has nothing to deal with qualifications and various positions within Government are Bipartisan, this also disenfranchises Americans whom want to become politicians themselves as PA forces them to have to choose a party in order to have a chance at the majority of voters due to voters themselves being locked behind affiliation as well. Its being played as a Monopoly game where 2 parties own half the board an those whom don’t agree with the cartoonishly evil Republicans or Money guzzling allergic to healthcare Dems it sucks that I have to be affiliated with the “lesser of 2 evils” rather then vote for whoever I want all across every aisle. I would also like to participate in a class action lawsuit as I heard about the lawsuit filings.

I have been a registered Democrat for the 21 years I have lived in Pennsylvania ONLY so I could vote in all elections!!!! If I could, once again, be registered as an Independent I would be thrilled as well as grateful for your efforts.

While teaching my teenagers about voting in PA, I regularly find that they have no allegiance to any particular party, but I urge them to “just pick one” so that they’re not disenfranchised during primaries. These young people find it appalling that they’re forced to select a party that doesn’t fit their beliefs simply to be able to cast a ballot in primaries. I sincerely believe that giving unaffiliated voters the ability to participate in primaries would have a positive effect by forcing candidates to compromise and focus on the silent majority rather than catering to their base’s extremists, who tend to be more politically active. As a result, candidates who make it to the general election in November would be better representatives for their constituents.

I shouldn’t be forced to be part and party to political parties that are incredibly opposed to my morals and belief systems to vote in primary elections. It is a violation of my first amendment rights.
